Subtitles

All twenty Sycamore films have subtitles/captions in English. These can be helpful not just for those who are hard of hearing but also for those whose first language is not English and who find it easier to read than listen to quick dialogue. For foreign language subtitles see the “languages” section of the website.

HOW TO USE THE SUBTITLES/CAPTIONS

All the main films have subtitles/captions in English. These subtitles include the main discussion questions that appear on the screen three times during each session. We hope to add other foreign language subtitles in the coming months. See the LANGUAGES section of the website for more information.

TO ACTIVATE THE SUBTITLES WHEN YOU WATCH THE FILMS ONLINE (STREAMING)

(i) Click on the “CC” link in the bottom right hand corner of the video:

(ii) Then choose which language you want and click on that:

(iii) The subtitles should now appear when you play the film

TO DOWNLOAD THE SUBTITLES AND USE THEM OFFLINE

(i) Download THE FILM itself using the DOWNLOAD link. Save this video file.

(ii) Download THE SUBTITLE FILES separately using the zip file at the bottom of this page.

(iii) When you play the video file on your own video player, there should be a facility to ADD SUBTITLES/CAPTIONS to this video. You can then add/upload the relevant subtitle/caption file for each individual film.

HOW TO PLAY YOUR DOWNLOADED FILM WITH SUBTITLES

This information copied below is from the Vimeo Help Centre, which recommends using VLC player if you are unsure what else to use to play your videos with subtitles:

  • Download both the video and the caption files to your computer (see above).
  • Once you’ve downloaded both files, you’ll need to use them with a media player that supports caption files. We recommend VLC because it is compatible with a wide range of operating systems and file formats. You can download it for free here.
  • Once you’ve installed VLC, follow these steps to watch your downloaded video with subtitles:
  • Open the downloaded video file in VLC Media Player.
  • From the menu, click Subtitles, then Add Subtitle File…
  • Select the downloaded .SRT file, click Open, and enjoy!
